Development and test of iron-free quadrupole lenses with high magnetic flux densities

Abstract Iron-free magnetic quadrupole lenses have been developed for the focusing of energetic bunched heavy-ion beams. These devices are operated in a pulsed mode and provide very strong magnetic fields. A magnetic flux density of more than 14 T has been reached in a 100 mm long quadrupole with a 20 mm wide aperture, which corresponds to a magnetic flux density of ∼1400 T/m. The pulse duration of the applied electric current is approximately 300 μs with a flat top of several μs. The calculated and measured field properties of the quadrupoles are presented. Search for long-lived, multi-charged particles in pp collisions at s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

A search for highly ionising, penetrating particles with electric charges from |q| = 2e to 6e is performed using the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Proton-proton collision data taken at sqrt(s)=7 TeV during the 2011 running period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, are analysed. No signal candidates are observed, and 95% confidence level cross-section upper limits are interpreted as mass-exclusion lower limits for a simplified Drell--Yan production model. In this model, masses are excluded from 50 GeV up to 430, 480, 490, 470 and 420 GeV for charges 2e, 3e, 4e, 5e and 6e, respectively.

Low noise scintillation detectors with a P-47 thin layer screen for electrons of several keV

Abstract The applicability of a low-noise scintillation detector (ScD) for the registration of electrons of several keV energy has been studied employing photomultipliers (PM) of different types and sizes. With the application of a sedimented P-47 scintillation screen, the values of the low-energy sensitivity limit and those of the light conversion coefficient were determined as about 2.7–4.7 keV and 2.8–6.6 photoelectrons/keV, respectively, for the set of PM's (Philips-Valvo XP 2020, Philips-Valvo XP 2052, Philips-Valvo XP 2972, EMI 9124a) studied. Electron-TOF-analyser for complete momentum analysis in photoemission from surfaces

Abstract We present a new method for momentum-selective imaging by means of a time-of-flight (TOF) technique. The instrument employs a time- and space-resolving delayline detector in combination with a parabolic electrostatic field and a drift space. We use this kind of spectrometer, to raise the efficiency of experiments, which are total momentum resolved. The main difference to conventional photoemission experiments using a rotatable spectrometer is the simultaneous detection of all emitted photoelectrons. Single-component plasma of photoelectrons

Abstract Ten-nanosecond pulses of photoelectrons liberated by intense UV laser pulses from a thin gold layer are captured into a single-component plasma that is ideally suited to cool antiprotons ( p ¯ ) for antihydrogen ( H ¯ ) production. Up to a billion electrons are accumulated using a series of laser pulses, more than are needed for efficient p ¯ cooling in the large traps now being used for loading p ¯ for H ¯ production. The method is demonstrated within an enclosed vacuum space that is entirely at 4 K, and is thus compatible with the exceptional cryogenic vacuum that is desirable for the long-term storage of antihydrogen. Improved instrument for the determination of the neutron electric charge

Abstract We present an improved instrument for the determination of the neutron electric charge with ultracold neutrons. Several technical upgrades with respect to a former experiment will be discussed in detail. As a first test, we applied the apparatus to investigate the influence of gravitational attraction by means of a massive block of lead. The calculated sensitivity for a charge measurement is δ q n ≈ 2.14 × 10 − 20 e / day . Planned modifications increasing the sensitivity up to δ q n ≈ 1.34 × 10 − 21 e / day are demonstrated.

Charge and magnetic moment of the neutrino in the background field method and in the linear R-xi(L) gauge

We present a computation of the charge and the magnetic moment of the neutrino in the recently developed electro-weak Background Field Method and in the linear $R_{\xi}^L$ gauge. First, we deduce a formal Ward-Takahashi identity which implies the immediate cancellation of the neutrino electric charge. This Ward-Takahashi identity is as simple as that for QED. The computation of the (proper and improper) one loop vertex diagrams contributing to the neutrino electric charge is also presented in an arbitrary gauge, checking in this way the Ward-Takahashi identity previously obtained. Monopolium: the key to monopoles

Dirac showed that the existence of one magnetic pole in the universe could offer an explanation for the discrete nature of the electric charge. Magnetic poles appear naturally in most Grand Unified Theories. Their discovery would be of greatest importance for particle physics and cosmology. The intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. Moreover, if the monopoles are very massive their production is outside the range of present day facilities.
